Praise Is a Weapon
The Scripture says God is âfearful in praisesâ (Exodus 15:11). One of my favorite stories in the Bible perfectly illustrates what this means. In 2 Chronicles 20, King Jehoshaphat and the people of Judah were surrounded on all sides by three enemy armies. Jehoshaphat gathered the people to fast, pray, and seek God. He prayed a powerful prayer, in which he said, âFor we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon Youâ (2 Chronicles 20:12). I love that: âWe donât know what to do, but our eyes are on You.â Iâve had to pray that many times myself. You may feel that way too as you battle your medical condition, but do what Jehoshaphat did and keep your eyes on God. Then the people turned their attention away from the crisis and started worshiping God: âThe [people] stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with voices loud and highâ (2 Chronicles 20:19). These people were facing annihilation, and they responded by praising God with all their might. The next morning, they woke up early to face the enemy, and King Jehoshaphat âappointed those who should sing to the LORD, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying: âPraise the LORD, for His mercy endures foreverââ (2 Chronicles 20:21).
Have you ever heard of a leader sending a praise team out to face enemy armies? In the natural, that sounds like a crazy battle strategy. But what happened next was breathtaking. As the people were praising God, it says âthe LORD set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeatedâ (2 Chronicles 20:22). It goes on to say the Lord caused the three armies to fight against each other until they were annihilated, without the people of Judah having to lift a finger! That is God being fearful in praises. Not only that, but the people of Judah took many valuables, precious jewelry, and other spoils from the enemy. No matter what enemy you are facing in your body or life, just begin to praise and worship God, and He will fight your battles for you.
Another well-known story from the Bible that demonstrates how God is fearful in praises is the battle of Jericho. After Mosesâ death, Joshua assumed the role as leader of the Israelites and took them into the Promised Land. The first enemies they encountered there were in Jericho, a fortified town with very high, thick walls. Archeologists have said the stone walls were about six feet thick and up to seventeen feet high. The Israelites had wandered in the wilderness for forty years after being slaves in Egypt and certainly were not prepared to defeat a fortified city like Jericho. But the Lord told Joshua to have the people march around the city quietly once a day for six days.
